Brooklyn Museum offers free family programs in May with events ranging from a Japanese print-making class to May’s Target First Saturday.
Held Saturdays and Sundays, Arty Facts participants meet in the Rubin Lobby promptly at 11 a.m. and again at 2 p.m.
Children, ages four to seven and accompanying adult friends, explore the galleries and create art in each 90-minute class.
Arty Facts offers a different program each day.
Programs are subject to change; call 718-638-5000 and press 1 and then 4 for up-to-date information. Note: there will be no Arty Facts May 24-25.
The Brooklyn Museum presents a free night of music, dance, and art-making classes that explores the arts and pop culture of Japan, past and present in conjunction with the exhibition Utagawa: Masters of the Japanese Print, 1770-1900, May 3 from 5-11 p.m.
Family-friendly highlights include the Hannya Teikoku Trio and Sizzle Ohtaku contemporizing the traditional melodic sounds of the Japanese shakuhachi flute from 6-8 p.m., the animation “Millennium Actress” at 6:30 p.m., and a drawing project in which participants can practice calligraphy with special brushes and ink from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Free tickets are required for some of the evening’s activities; for a full list of programs visit www.brooklynmuseum.org.
In conjunction with the special Utagawa exhibition, teens are invited to participate in a one-day printmaking workshop at the museum, May 31 from 2-5 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
Utagawa features 95 Japanese woodblock prints by more than 15 artists. These intricately detailed color prints depict Kabuki actors, geishas, and landscape.
