Closing the books

Community Board 14 has broken for the summer, but not without first taking care of some business.

At the group’s June meeting held last week at P.S. 249, 18 Marlborough Road, Chair Alvin Berk called on members to support the drafting of a letter to the Department of City Planning expanding on residents’ concerns about rezoning and overdevelopment.

Following hearings held earlier this month, Berk urged fellow CB 14 members to back a letter calling on the Department of City Planning to rethink the statistics it used in assessing the housing stock in areas of Midwood and Ditmas Park.

While members agreed, some pressed for the letter to go even further.

At hearings held earlier this month, some area residents complained that City Planning was attempting to foist new zoning regulations on their communities that just didn’t fit.

In calling for the letter, Berk took issue with City Planning’s methodology and suggested the agency base its rezoning efforts on figures that more accurately reflect the buildings constructed in the areas to be rezoned.

The board also made quick work ratifying earlier recommendations okaying a construction extension for 1016 East 13th Street and granting special permits for construction projects at 1121 East 28th Street and 1383 East 27th Street.

CB 14 still faces the prospect of losing as much as $16,000 in funding if proposed cuts to community boards become a reality.

Nevertheless, the group officially welcomed six new members to the fold and enabled a special committee to act on behalf of the full board during the summer break.

Although there will not be any meeting held in July or August, CB 14’s offices at 810 East 16th Street will continue to operate. CB 14 can be reached at 718-859-6357.
