Chappelle set to stump

If politics can be considered a comedy unto itself, then he’s just going to throw in a few more laughs.

Iconic comedian Dave Chappelle will be headlining a special fundraiser for Brooklyn congressional candidate Kevin Powell next month, it was announced this week.

Powell, a journalist, writer and “The Real World” alumni, is running to unseat 26-year incumbent Edolphus Towns for the 10th Congressional District, which encompasses Fort Greene, Brooklyn Heights, Williamsburg and parts of Flatbush and Canarsie.

The special evening will be held at Eugene, located at 27 West 24th Street in Manhattan, starting at 7 p.m. July 9.

Powell said that he and Chappelle, who won two Emmys for his wildly popular “Chappelle’s Show” on Comedy Central, have been friends for a long time.

“Our friendship goes back to 1992 when he was a young comedian in New York and I was a young writer,” Powell said. “I dated someone who went to school with him at the High School of Performing Arts in Washington D.C. and we’ve been friends ever since.”

In fact, after Chappelle made headlines for abandoning “Chappelle’s Show,” as well as a $55 million contract with Comedy Central, Powell was the only reporter Chappelle would agree to be interviewed by.

It’s expected that Chappelle will share some laughs with Powell’s supporters. He’ll probably also talk about Brooklyn, where he routinely returns to host block parties. Once such celebration ended up becoming a concert movie entitled, “Dave Chappelle’s Block Party.”
