‘Players’ 42nd season opens

The Gallery Players, Brooklyn’s premier Off-Off Broadway company, kicks off its 42nd season with the social satire “The Underpants,” a hilarious Steve Martin adaptation from the classic German farce by Carl Sternheim. The show runs for a limited engagement (12 performances only), September 13-28.

Martin, the renowned comic actor and author, provides a wild satire adapted from the classic German play about Louise and Theo Maske, a couple whose conservative existence is shattered when Louise’s bloomers fall down in public. Though she pulls them up quickly, he thinks the incident will cost him his job as a government clerk.

Louise’s momentary display does not result in the feared scandal but it does attract two infatuated men, each of whom wants to rent the spare room in the Maskes’ home. Oblivious of their amorous objectives, Theo splits the room between them, happy to collect rent from both the foppish poet and the whiny hypochondriac.

Performances are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. There are two additional Saturday matinees, September 20 and 27 at 2 p.m.

Tickets $18, $14 for seniors and children 12 and under; call TheaterMania at 212-352-3101 or visit www.galleryplayers.com.

The Gallery Players is at 199 14th Street between Fourth & Fifth avenues in Park Slope.
