Today’s news:

United Way day of action

United Way of New York City (UWNYC) is calling on New Yorkers to “Live United” to help raise awareness about the need to bridge the gaps in education, income and health in New York City by walking together across the Brooklyn Bridge, September 20, and to attend a volunteer festival co-sponsored by the Mayor’s Volunteer Center at Cadman Plaza Park.

The Day of Action kicks off with an opening ceremony at 9:45 a.m., at City Hall Park in lower Manhattan just steps from the Brooklyn Bridge. Participants will then walk from City Hall Park across the Brooklyn Bridge at 10 a.m. to the Volunteer Festival at Cadman Park Plaza in Brooklyn, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

At the Volunteer Festival, the public will enjoy entertainment and family activities, visit with dozens of New York City nonprofit organizations and learn about hundreds of volunteer opportunities around the city.

The Live United campaign was developed with the understanding that there are three basic building blocks needed for a good quality of life: a quality education that leads to a stable job; income that can support a family; and good health.

While these goals are beyond the reach of millions of Americans, United Way believes together, New Yorkers can become an active part of the solution.
