Sam Horwitz marks 90th - Retired councilman celebrates birthday with friends

Retired Councilman Sam Horwitz. was joined by more than 100 family members, friends, former City Council colleagues and supporters during a 90th birthday celebration held in his honor at the exclusive Manhattan Club.

Horwitz’s wife Estelle, their children Mark and Susan, and grandchildren Jacob, Phoebe, Nate and Will hosted the celebration, attended by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz who presented the retired legislator with a proclamation.

Also in attendance were former City Council colleagues Priscilla Wooten, June Eisland, Fred Cerutti, Carol Greitzer, Shelly Silverstein and former District Republican Leader Joe Neglia, and long time friends Mr. & Mrs. Frank Giordano, and “Brooklyn Graphic” columnists Lou Powsner and Carmine Santa Maria.

Longtime friend Sol Yeager, a famed jazz clarinetist dating back to the swing-era, and his band performed music during the cocktail hour, to the delight of attendees of all ages.

An updated song sheet from the Coney Island/Brighton Beach councilman’s 80th birthday party was distributed for a sing-a-long. Sung to the tune of Davy Crockett, King of the Wild frontier, the tune, entitled “Samuel, Samuel Horwitz, 90 Wonderful years,” was re-worked to chronicle the councilman’s illustrious life.

Born in Connecticut in 1918, Horwitz met Estelle, the love of his life, got married and settled in Brooklyn, raising their two children Mark and Susan. Over the years, the couple owned several movie houses in Coney Island.

He soon got involved in politics and after losing his first election never lost another. Horwitz remained in the City Council for 20 years before retiring to Florida in 1994.
