Taylor Lloyd isn’t really known for her offense. She usually leaves that to Baytania Newman, Angel Porter and Jasmine Odom – her teammates on the South Shore girls’ basketball team.
“She’s a defensive player,” Vikings coach Anwar Gladden said. “She guards the other team’s top offensive threat.”
But Sunday, Lloyd was South Shore’s top offensive threat. The junior guard had 15 points to lead the Vikings to a 50-40 win against Notre Dame Academy at the Aviator Basketball Fall Classic in Brooklyn.
South Shore (3-0) loves to press and excels on the run and that’s where Lloyd comes in. She’s a speed demon and has quick hands with the mindset to strip her opponents’ of the ball. In many ways, her offense Sunday was due to her defense.
“I bring energy,” Lloyd said. “I’m not the strongest offensive player.”
The Vikings led 30-28 at the end of the third quarter, but took off in the fourth and put away the Gators. Odom and Porter each scored 10 points apiece. Rachel Rusi had nine points and Katelyn Hepworth and Breanne Gasser added eight each for NDA (0-2).
Odom is one of the top sophomores in the city and Porter and Newman are both getting Division I attention, but Lloyd showed how much of a key she was to South Shore’s success Sunday.
“She’s the fastest kid on the team,” Gladden said. “By the end of the year, more people will know about her.”
