Noting Bklyn’s greatness-New ‘Hall of Fame’ debuts online; vote for your favorite

Brooklyn is bursting with pride, and now there’s an easy way to celebrate it.

The borough’s own “Hall of Fame” launched this month, a Web site devoted to all things Brooklyn.

Created by a handful of friends who live in Brooklyn, the blog pays tribute to those who have hailed from the borough, or now call it home, from a range of fields, including literature, the arts, film, sports and politics. All-stars such as Walt Whitman, Lauren Bacall, Jackie Robinson, Henry Miller, John A. Roebling, his wife, Emily, and Harry Houdini are all up to be nominated for induction into the Hall of Fame, with voting now and the first round of five inducted on March 20, 2009.

While a challenge to come up with the initial nominees, the creators of the site culled it down to  15 Brooklynites for starters. They have found, between their own brainstorming and suggestions from readers, that at five a year, they would have enough people to induct for the next hundred years.

The group started the site after hearing that New Jersey had established its own Hall of Fame. After considering how many Hall of Fame-worthy people come from Brooklyn, or made a name for themselves while living here, they realized the borough needed its own special way to mark those who have vaulted themselves into American culture and history.

In addition to the Hall of Fame, which so far sees Whitman, Robinson and Houdini in the top spots, the site is also a resource for features such as “Brooklynite of the Week” (one recent feature is on Marisa Tomei), “Brooklyn Image of the Week,” “Brooklyn in the News,” and “Writers in Brooklyn,” as well as clips of movies filmed in the borough, including “Do the Right Thing” and “On the Waterfront.”

Encompassing a bit of high and low culture, the creators hope for the site to be a fun spot as you sift through your blog roll through sites like Gowanus Lounge and more neighborhood-specific blogs as you get your Brooklyn fix.
