Today’s news:

Cavallaro cares a lot!

“The Caring School,” Joseph B. Cavallaro MS−IS 281 has lived up to its name.

The Bensonhurst school, 8787 24th Avenue, raised $9,513.92 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s annual “Pennies for Patients” drive, a charity, which uses funds to help children who suffer from leukemia and other blood−related cancers.

The amount of money raised was “the highest of all the schools in the city,” said Mark Hayden, the school’s assistant principal, who coordinates the fundraiser each year. “It was about $3,000 more than we raised last year, and that’s quite an accomplishment, considering this economy.” It got them interviewed by CBS Radio.

The students saved their pennies in anticipation of the drive, and many donated funds they had received for birthdays and special occasions such as Chinese New Year. All members of the Cavallaro family participated, including the PTA and the staff. The mother of one seventh−grade student, Krystal Sandoval, “raised a sizable amount of money at her office,” said Hayden. His own young son, who does not attend the school, contributed change from his piggy bank.

Principal Stephen Rosenblum noted that this is “just one of many charities” in which the school participates. For example, Cavallaro students are involved in the “Toys for Tots” program each December; have “adopted” a local firehouse, bringing gifts to firefighters each month; have sent letters and supplies to soldiers in Iraq; and volunteer at senior citizen functions.
