Annual Holocaust observance coming

The Holocaust Memorial Committee’s 25th Annual Gathering & Exhibit will be held at 12 p.m., June 14 at Holocaust Memorial Park, Shore Boulevard and Emmons Avenue at the foot of Sheepshead Bay.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg will be on hand for this 25th anniversary commemorating the establishment of the Holocaust Memorial Park.

The theme of the day will be “Remembrance and Responsibility,” and the committee and guests will pay tribute to two women who rescued hundreds of Jewish lives: Irena Sendler, who saved 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto, and Irene Gut OpDyke, currently portrayed in “Irena’s Vow,” now on Broadway.

The day’s program will feature Shmuel ben Eliezer, Elizabeth Zborowsky, Jeannie OpDyke Smith, the Edward R. Murrow Mixed Chorus, Leon M. Goldstein High School Chorus, violinist Alexander Amir, child virtuoso Nikole Naloychenko, and Cantor Pinchas Cohen, as well as a candlelighting ceremony featuring Holocaust survivors and youth.

There will also be exhibits and book displays, and memorial prayers will be recited.

Awards will be presented to the winners of the Essay, Poetry & Art Contests by Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz, the Holocaust Memorial Committee, and the Lena Cymbrowitz Foundation, and The NYPD Shomrim Society will also make an appearance.

In the event of rain, the program will be held at the Bay Academy, across from Holocaust Memorial Park.
