Today’s news:

Middle school search in District 15

With the middle school application process underway, parents and students should consider all of the junior highs in School District 15 and not just the ones with the best reputations.

“By and large, there are substantial and numerous things happening at schools in our district,” said Jim Devor, president of the local Community Education Council (CEC).

He noted that all but two schools in District 15, which includes Red Hook, Park Slope and Sunset Park, received an A rating on their latest school report cards.

“Our schools are in very good shape,” he said.

In years past, most prospective sixth-graders applied for the same seats in a handful of popular schools, including the Upper Carroll School, Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies and M.S. 51. In 2005, the CEC hosted its first annual middle school fair to offer parents information about all of the district’s middle schools. This is especially important as the city continues to create and open new small schools, the CEC says.

At this year’s fair, principals and teachers were on hand to discuss their schools’ programs with the dozens of parents who packed P.S. 295’s auditorium on 18th Street.

Carroll Gardens resident Maya Marchese-Reiley said she wanted to hear from principals “to get some sort of information because this is confusing — the schools that are out there, the process.”

“It’s sort of ridiculous the hoops you have to jump through to find a middle school,” she said.

Many District 15 middle schools are now holding open houses. Contact the schools for dates and times. Applications are due on December 15. For a full timeline of the application process, visit
