CHSAA boys’ basketball round-up: Rice bounces back

After a stunning loss to Xaverian on Sunday, Rice got back on track Tuesday with an 80-49 victory against St. Francis Prep in a CHSAA Class AA league game Tuesday afternoon in Fresh Meadows.

Shamel Williams scored a team-high 15 points and James Stukes added 12 for Rice (17-3, 9-2). George Hatzionnides scored a game-high 16 points and Ariel Gomerez and Robert Nacer added 13 points apiece for St. Francis Prep (8-16, 0-13).

St. Edmund 61, Stepinac 59: Vinny Marchiano (17 points), Jamie Thelwell (14), Bryan Garvey (9 points 11 assists), and David Louison (7 points and 17 rebounds) led the way for St. Edmund (7-17, 4-13 A-South) in a Class A league game Tuesday in Brooklyn. Conroy Baltimore had 16 points, Eddie Byrne added 14 and Thomas Decker had 11 for Stepinac (13-10, 10-6 A-North).

Iona Prep 85, Cardinal Hayes 66: Brian Voelkel had a game-high 24 points, Andre Pope had 19 points and Jeff Mack and Sandro Carissimo added 14 apiece for Iona Prep (22-1, 16-0 A-North) in a Class A league game Tuesday in the Bronx. Nay-Quan Bloomer had 15 points and Tiquan Braithwaite added 11 for Hayes (11-13, 5-11 A-North).

Mount St. Michael 76, Regis 49: Pete Aguilar had a game-high 25 points, Nigel Mitchell had nine points, Chris Gay had eight and Will Williams and Gary Acquah scored seven apiece for Mount (17-6, 10-6 A-North) in a Class A league game Tuesday in Manhattan. Ruben Garcia had nine points to lead Regis (7-17, 5-12 A-Central).

St. Agnes 80, Blessed Sacrament 64: Brandon Whitaker had 27 points, six assists and six rebounds, Anthony Resto had 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and Kerry Weldon added 11 points and 14 boards for St. Agnes (17-5, 9-1 'B') in a CHSAA Class B league game Tuesday at Xavier HS.
