2009’s ups and downs

Canarsie’s felony assaults — as well as shootings — dipped in 2009 while robberies took an unexpected jump, according to year-end CompStat figures.

Officials said that the number of shootings in the 69th Precinct fell by three from 30 in 2008 to 27. Homicides were also down, from seven to six. The number of assaults dropped by nearly 23 percent, from 162 to 125.

Yet at the same time robbery numbers increased by 4.3 percent, from 236 to 246.

Burglaries in the command fell by 29 percent, from 354 to 294, according to NYPD CompStat numbers.

Car thefts also fell, by nearly five percent (204 to 194), officials said.

Overall, felony crime in the 69th Precinct fell by 12.3 percent for the year.

Over the last 16 years, crime in Canarsie has dropped by just over 75 percent, officials said.
