They’ve traded a toxic canal in the Gowanus for an artist’s loft in Bushwick.
Sunday Best, whose popular DJ-driven dance parties have taken over the BKLYN Yard adjacent to the Gowanus Canal for the past four years, has moved the party to the courtyard at the Brooklyn Fireproof.
“Even though our liquor permitting process was near completion and all the other necessary logistics were sorted out, we were prevented from continuing to operate in the space,” said Sunday Best’s Doug Singer, on his Web site.
A two-week alcohol-free stint at the BKLYN Yard didn’t work out, so the DJs are packing their turntables for the dim lights and fetid smells of Varick Avenue. Its new neighbors include a Waste Management recycling plant, the Joyva Corporation’s tahini factory, and a workforce development center for The Doe Fund.
That’s a step up from an infamously polluted waterway that has required federal invention, but fear not fans of Brooklyn’s industrial past! There’s another, even more polluted waterway, just three blocks away — Newtown Creek.
