Neighborhood group and community college slug it out on softball field

The Yankees may have lost the pennant, but America’s pastime was alive and well in Manhattan Beach on Oct. 24.

The Manhattan Beach Neighborhood Association took the field against the Kingsborough Community College staff for nine innings of softball on Sunday’s beautiful afternoon. The community group won 10-8 on the college’s turf, but all players involved said that the game was more about cooperation than competition.

“This game has strengthened our relationship with the college’s staff,” said the group’s president Alan Ditchek, who played catcher for his team. “We look forward to working with the college on issues that affect us as a community.”

Sports Center-worthy highlights included Councilman Mike Nelson’s three innings on the mound, the neighborhood association’s barrage of homers and a sweet tag out at second base by the college’s Candy Maldonado.

“It was the first time we played softball with Kingsborogh Community College, but we don’t think it will be the last,” Ditchek said.
