Black and yellow, black and yellow, NOT! With Green Bay trouncing the Steelers with a two-touchdown lead as Super Bowl 45 came to a close. Ahh, another year … another bunch of commercials.
Cars and more cars. Okay, Mad Men, we get it. You want us to buy more cars — and with gas nearing four bucks a gallon it’s just what we need. It would seem that the auto industry is recovering nicely from its near demise when GM and Chrysler sought and received federal bailout money to survive. Let’s face it, if they can blow $3,000,000 a pop for each spot, they’ve got to be doing really well.
But without further ado, I’m going to skip straight to my favorite commercials (warning, this year’s list is short):
• The “MickyDee” spot withpapa bear and son: The son gets straight A’s and papa springs for a burger and fries, only in bear terms, that means scaring humans out of a car, overturning it, and finding the last hidden fry under the seat. I’vegot to agree with pops. There is always one fry left at the bottom of the console.
• The Volkswagen spot with thelittle boy in the Darth Vader costume: What can I say, I’m just a sucker for a kid in a Darth Vader costume. May the force be with you.
• The Budweiser spot set in the old West: How can you not love the Budweiser Clydesdales? I will never be able to listen to “Tiny Dancer” again without the vision of a cold Bud, a cowboy and giant horses in my head.
The rest of them were okeydokey, not bad, not great, mostly ho-hum, with post-halftime ads better than pre.
Two E-Trade baby spots were cute, but not boffo. And, of course, more car ads. The Beetle spot at the end of the game made me smile.
Honorable mention to Snicker’s, but I don’t think it will do for Richard Lewis and Roseanne Barr what it did for Betty White and Abe Vigoda.
And come on folks, Justin Bieber and Ozzy Osbourne on the same screen at the same time in the same spot? Just way too much for my gray matter to process. Although I must admit, Ozzy did look a lot better than he has in recent years.
Not to be out-twisted, the Go-Daddy spot featured Joan Rivers in a body double black Go-Daddy tee.Again — TMI for me.
And lastly, the Doritos ad. It did not disappoint but was just a bit twisted for my taste.
What really surprised me the most this year was that I actually watched the game for the game. I must be slippin’.Not For Nuthin, but I do miss the Geico Cavemen. And where was the SoBe lizard? Maybe next year. Jdelbuono@cnglocal.com
