The Brooklyn Aviators crushed the New Jersey Outlaws — again — on Sunday, blasting the Federal Hockey League’s top-ranked team apart with a 4–3 victory in Dirty Jersey.
The spectacular triumph caps off the Aviators’ regular season with a three-game winning streak, and proves that Brooklyn’s boys of winter can handle anything the Federal Hockey League throws at them.
The A’s and the Outlaws were neck and neck throughout the first period at the Capital One Ice Vault: Aviators right winger Andrew Scampoli drew first blood 10 minutes in thanks to a pass off from Michael Thomson, but the Outlaws quickly evened things up, scoring four minutes before the final buzzer sounded.
The second period opened with a quick goal from Aviators ace Jesse Felten, who scored on a powerplay in the first minute, but the Outlaws hijacked another tie after managing to sneak the puck past A’s netminder Michael DiLorenzo six minutes later. Aviator center Jason Dolgy finally broke the tie, and grabbed the lead, with less than two minutes remaining in the middle frame.
Aviator right winger Casey Mignone kept Brooklyn’s winning momentum going with a point three minutes into the final round. Jersey scored the game’s final point with four minutes remaining in the set, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win.
The Outlaws outshot the Aviators 42–32, but not all the hits were directed at the goalie: Aviator Nick Wheeler shed his gloves and brawled with Outlaw Brett Liscomb five minutes into the third period — a brief preview of the beat down the Outlaws received later in the frame as Brooklyn snatched New Jersey’s final home game of the season away from them.
The Aviators will return to the Aviator Sports and Events Center [3159 Flatbush Ave. in Floyd Bennett Field in Marine Park, (718) 758-7580] next week for the first round of the 2012 playoffs. Check back with BrooklynDaily.com or www.BrooklynAviators.com for dates, times and ticket prices.
