New Utrecht High School breathes fun into ‘Year of the Dragon’

Brooklyn Daily

Traditional and modern dances — from the lilting Lion’s jig to happenin’ hip-hop — commanded center stage at New Utrecht High School, where students celebrated the Chinese New Year with eye-popping performances to usher in the Year of the Dragon.

There was enough fun and festivity to ignite the mythical serpent into full-blown action!

Korean drum dancers banged out the beats alongside budding virtuosos from Fiona’s Music Studio, while day care tots from Top Scholars Academy sang up a storm, and karate kids from Master Jack Zhang’s Martial Arts School proved their chops with cool drills. Visiting students from PS 105 in Sunset Park received an A-plus for their showmanship, performing a variety of song and dance routines for the packed house, which also thundered out the applause at the March 3 intergenerational event for singing and dancing seniors from Homecrest Community Services, and the Sunset Park Dance Group.

The razzle-dazzle was only fitting considering the holiday is one of the most important on the Chinese calendar, said Yan Lin, a counselor at New Utrecht and advisor to its Asian Club, whose members also stepped on stage to entertain.

“Parents and grandparents really appreciate that they get to see their child perform, and for the chance to see the community come together,” noted Lin, adding that the merriment was a boon to the area. “It continues our heritage and introduces it to other cultures in the community.”

Some customs were extra rave-worthy: kids received goody bags, and red money envelopes to signify luck and prosperity.

The revel was held in collaboration with the Chinese American Community Partnership and state Sen. Marty Golden (R–Bay Ridge).
