Hats off to Emani-Tierra. She’s a dancer, model, actress, and one heck of a student at the Gramercy Performing Arts HS in that other borough, Manhattan. Recently, the twinkling, twirling, tapping native daughter performed at Lincoln Center’s “Arts Festival for the Arts Education Institute.” According to her Facebook page, Emani “loves all things glam, perfecting my catwalk, dance and laughing.” Our Standing O pal will go far, she’s as beautiful inside as she is outside, she volunteers in her community, is active in teen AIDS advocacy, and she’s even traveled to South Africa in support of the group, as well as participated in a whole lot of clean-ups around her community.
Standing O can’t wait to say “We remember her when…” after she hits the bright lights of Broadway and the silver screen.
Tighten your black belts and get ready for the competition of the century. You heard right, the century. Arron Banks, 10th degree black belt, promoter, actor, and master of the broken boards is presenting the US Karate Tournament on May 20. The event, which pits students from the Sunset Park Martial Arts Studio, led by Master Hector Arias, against martial art practitioners from other dojos throughout the tri-state area, will present trophies and medals, in gold, silver, and bronze to the best karate choppers around. Divisions include fighting (hand-to-hand combat); breaking boards and bricks; and weaponry. Yikes! Participants range in age from expert toddler to senior citizen and represent the brightest, baddest, and bestest martial artists in the borough. Come on down to Our Lady of Perpetual Help on May 20 from 10 am to 6 pm and witness the greatest exhibition of all time. Master Hector has instructed his students well. Tickets are truly a bargain at $15.

We hear that Dr. Garry S. Sklar presented a $1,000,000 check to SUNY Downstate Medical Center to endow the Garry S. Sklar, MD Professorship of Anesthesiology. That’s a whole lotta naughts when you’re counting backwards. We can never have enough highly skilled anesthesiologists out there, now can we?

Brava, brava to Rossella Failla for earning the highest score ever and in the entire nation on the 2012 National Italian Exam. All Standing O can say is, “Congratulazioni per aver vinto questo premio si meritano StandingO,” which means one heck of a Standing O in any language. Standing O pal Rossella won bragging rights and a check for $250 scarollas, not Euros.
