Coney Island ace Hansel Robles nearly threw a perfect game, while Vermont hurlers didn’t give up a hit until the ninth in walk-off Brooklyn win that will be remembered as one of the greatest pitching games in short season single A history.
Robles was dominant the moment he touched the rubber, fanning seven Lake Monsters and keeping Vermont off the board and off the bases through eight and two-thirds innings. But Vermont’s hurlers were nearly as impressive, with a trifecta of Kris Hall, Seth Streich, and Omar Duran giving up no hits and four walks until the bottom of the ninth.
Vermont third baseman Daniel Roberston shattered Robles’s hopes at a perfect game with two outs in the eighth, when he got on base with a single. No longer perfect, the Clones decided to give Robles some well-deserved rest and put in closer Tyler Vanderheiden.
Brooklyn broke up the Vermont no-hitter in the bottom of the ninth when third baseman Dimas Ponce smacked a line drive to center off lefty Omar Duran. With the no-no no longer in play, Vermont manager Rick Magnante pulled Duran for righty Ryan Dull — but quickly regretted it. Dull threw a wild pitch that let Ponce take second, then surrendered a single to shortstop Phillip Evans that ended the game in walk-off fashion.
Cyclones skipper Rich Donnelly missed all the excitement in the ninth after ump Ryan Benson tossed him out of the game in the sixth for arguing strikes and balls.
The Clones are now just three games out of first place in the McNamara Division of the NY-Penn League, trailing the Hudson Valley Renegades. They remain five games ahead of the State College Spikes at the top of the wild card race.
The Cyclones are home again at MCU Park [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 17th Street in Coney Island, (718) 449–8497, www.brooklyncyclones.com] tonight at 6 pm as they take on the Vermont Lake Monsters.
