Firefighters cordon off Rockaway Parkway station house when grenade is dropped off

Bicyclist brings smoke grenade to Rockaway Parkway station house

Brooklyn Daily

Firefighters usually run towards danger. But, sometimes, danger knocks on their station house door.

FDNY officials shut down Ladder Company 170 on Rockaway Parkway in Canarsie on Thursday morning after a bicyclist knocked on the door carrying a live grenade.

The bicyclist said he was looking for a way to get rid of the device — a move that prompted smoke eaters to call the NYPD bomb squad,

Firefighters cordoned off the Canarsie fire station for about an hour as police investigated, identifying the explosive as something firefighters should be quite familiar with — a smoke grenade.

But it didn’t take long for the all clear to be sounded: cops were seen casually holding the grenade a mere five minutes after the bomb squad arrived, witnesses said.
