Today’s news:

Candidates for Coney Island Council Seat Compete with Claims to Have Brought Jobs to Neighborhood

Recchia-seat hopefuls boast of connecting residents with work

Brooklyn Daily

Coney council candidates clashed over who brought the most jobs to the People’s Playground when they faced off at a debate on June 13.

Three of the candidates aiming to replace term-limited Councilman Domenic Recchia (D–Coney Island) — community activist Todd Dobrin, aide to Assemblyman Bill Colton (D–Bensonhurst) Mark Treyger, and Pastor Connis Mobley of the United Community Baptist Church — tangled over who had done the most to ease chronic unemployment in the impoverished residential section of the neighborhood.

Treyger told the audience in the auditorium of PS 329 at W. 30th Street and Mermaid Avenue that, as a teacher at New Utrecht High School in Bensonhurst, he had helped create a program to train students from Coney Island to become lifeguards on the beach. But that drew a sharp retort from Dobrin, who claimed that the initiative was started by his group, Friends of the Boardwalk.

“That’s a very old program. We started it 30 years ago,” said Dobrin.

But an irate Treyger denied that his program any connection to the Friends of the Boardwalk initiative.

“I’m not saying it didn’t exist, but I never heard of it,” Treyger fired back.

Dobrin also butted heads with Mobley after the minister claimed to have gotten Luna Park to hire 125 neighborhood youth. Dobrin argued that the jobs in the amusement district did not provide enough money or opportunities for advancement.

“Are these long-term jobs with prevailing wages and career paths?” demanded Dobrin. “Or are they just ‘here’s a service job for a minute or two?’ ”

Mobley responded that he had also helped more than 200 Coney Islanders get certification from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to work on scaffolding.

“We have helped our people get the training they need to find work to provide for their families,” Mobley said.

The debate was the brainchild of the People’s Coalition of Coney Island — an umbrella group of community organizations that has controversially claimed that post-Sandy recovery has unfairly focused on the amusement district at the expense of year-round residents.

Two other candidates also participated in the forum, but didn’t contribute to the verbal fireworks over jobs.

John Lisyanskiy, a former aide to Council Speaker Christine Quinn is competing with Treyger, Dobrin, and Mobley for the Democratic nomination in the September. Construction worker Andy Sullivan is the lone Republican in the race to represent the district that spans Seagate and Coney Island, along with parts of Gravesend, Bensonhurst, and Bath Beach.

Todd Dobrin is all wet on the lifeguard issue. As President of of his non-profit Friends of the Boardwalk , I beleive Mr. Dobrin is its only member. A one member Non-Profit.
After Marty Levine was voted out as the fouding President of Friends of the Boardwalk, the organization crashed & burned with Todd Dobrin at the helm. All of the board members either resigned or just quit. This is directly attributed to Todd Dobrin's lack of organization & and lack of a motivational force to get things done.
As far as the lifeguard issue it was Marty Levine & others on the origianl board of trustees who came up with the Lifeguard Scholarships given to those lifeguards who were did oustanding service while on duty for the summer at Coney & Brighton Beaches.
In fact Marty Levine together with a few board members had several Dinners to honor these lifeguards & also Community Leaders at Garguilo's . The cash Scholarships to the lifeguards were Sponsored by various businesses & political leaders.
Todd Dobrin : All Talk & No Action !

Pat from Coney says:
"Mark Treyger denied any knowledge of Dobrin’s program." Mark Treyger bought a home in Bergen Beach years ago and settled there with his wife. He is not running this race, BILL COLTON IS! Sure he does not know about Todd's program, he doesn't know a lot more of what's going on in our community and what the issues and priorities are, except what is going on in his classroom, where he belongs and should stay there. What a sham for Coney Island people to even consider this person as their councilman. Coney is dead in and by the water should this guy get elected. Wake up people you are getting tricked with no treat. He is just a poster child for UFT and aside from becoming a puppet of special outside interests such as BILL COLTON and UFT has zero to add to the discussion.

Nick from Bensonhurst says:
So Pat,
Beside being a lap dog for Dobrin you've added nothing to the conversation. Dobrin takes credit for things to which he's never contributed (like job creation). New Utrecht H.S. lifeguards were featured in the Daily News as the FIRST life SAVERS of the program. Look it up (if you know how). Dobrin is trying to compare this to making Lincoln High School a mass testing center (as it is for SATs). Being a witness doesn't make him a participant. And Pat, if that's your real name, I'lll bet your still proud this automated system even presented your remarks. Congrats!

Pat from Coney says:
Glad you brought that up! the only lap dog here is MARK TREYGER for BILL COLTON. His "WE" not "I" clearly spells the fact that the man never initiated, provided or accomplished anything for the community himself nor lead anything except his classroom in his life. His entire involvement was in the shadows of BILL COLTON, he has zero record to stand on his own and COLTON is conveniently allowing MARK to use his record in the community, because MARK is an outsider from BERGEN BEACH unknown to the community and just a political crony who ran COLTON'S geriatric political club. NOW, what did Treyger have to do with New Utrecht's lifeguard program? NOTHING! here is the article http://www.nydailynews.com/archives/boroughs/teens-swim-guard-city-beaches-article-1.557622

Pat from Brighton Beach says:
Does anyone know what John Lisyansky has done for Coney before the election? Reading this article makes me feel he didn't have much to say. . maybe because he did nothing. Todd has been around for a long time and I am glad his work is being given the attention it deserves

Genevieve from Gravesend says:
Pat is hilarious. Obviously on the DOBRIN LOSING BANDWAGON. Since you're such a creepy spy into Treygers life, you should know he already moved into the district lines !! Keep up with your espionage , you're slacking !!

Also--how dare you say who should stay in their profession and who should not!! Mind your business and get a life- and maybe an original thought too while you're at it!!

sal from coney island says:
To Pat : You and Dobrin perfect together. But not for the 47th Council District.
As far as Dobrin taking credit for the opposition to the Seaside/ Asser Levy Park Amphitheater it is a TOTAL LIE !
In fact when he was on Community Board 13 , he supported the building of the Amphitheater. He was actually on Marty Markowitz's Citizens Advisory Board to move the Amphitheater forward, together with the other Board member Barbara Teitelbaum. It's all in the minutes of various Community meetings.
So in other words Mr. Dobrin speaks from both sides of his mouth. Is always burning the candle from both ends.
Todd Dobrin before moving into Seagate just a little while ago had lived in Bensonhurst for many years. He owned a house their with his brother Jared , sold his house & still lived in Bensonhurst where he rented an apartment.
In addtion... Mr. Dobrin talked about having an issue with his child being educated in the NYC School system as it is currently run by Mayoral control.
Well , Pat... the fact is that his wife lives in Florida with their child , so Mr. Dobrin really doesn't have any skin in the game here in the 47th( no credibilty at all) with his child attending the NYC school system. It's not going to happen.
Mr. Dobrin will tell you what you want to hear.
He's phony baloney !

Pat from Coney says:
Did MARK TREYGER sell his fancy house in fancy neighborhood of BERGEN BEACH? Probably not!! So that after he loses he can conveniently move back to his fancy place and have nothing to do with our community as it has been this past decade that he claims to have been involved. TREYGER is nothing but a mascot for BILL COLTON who is doing all his bidding! Striking deals left and right for his crony Treyger. COLTON is making promises he will not keep, MARK will crash and burn once the community finds out the truth about his fake candidacy and outside interests trying to control this Council seat. This is 2013 not 1980 this type of politics will not fly in the face of the people who live here and deserve better! MARK should take the high road and exit the race with dignity and not continue with lies in this race.
June 19, 2013, 1:52 pm
Pat from Coney says:
Why did MARK TREYGER BUY a house in BERGEN BEACH JOEY? You just said more lies about Treyger than he would ever admit to, this is all getting copied and saved with date stamp! and to Vlad or Joey or BILL COLTON who is doing the bidding here for MARK TREYGER about that press release on lifeguards was that a joke? A PRESS RELEASE? how about I bring your attention to this ASSEMBLY MEMBER FLYER, please everyone reading this, observe carefully the issues in this flyer and find the name MARK TREYGER! http://assembly.state.ny.us/member_files/047/20060720/

Now watch out, this may disappear from the official assembly website after a call to Speaker Shelly Silver, a guy who knows a thing or two about the cover ups. but don't worry we got a copy of this one saved as well.
June 19, 2013, 2:24 pm
Pat from Coney says:
To Joey,

Outside interests for MARK TREYGER is not the UFT, it is BILL COLTON but wait, there is more! And this will blow your mind, but it is not for this discussion here, people will learn the truth. MARK is done, he can pack up and go to his still unsold home in BERGEN BEACH!

To Joey :

Even though Mr. Dobrin may have been supported by unions, these are Trade Unions ( blue collar unions, construction etc., which are dictated by the Central Labor Council. They are locked into these endorsements. Most of these guys vote Republican.
No choices in that matter !
And for that matter , since Mr. Dobrin is so tight with the Trade Unions ....What if any jobs has Dobrin brought to the Community of Coney Island, Gravesend or Bensonhusrt???
And survey says.....NOTHING , NO JOBS , NADA !

Dobrin is a phoney !

Pat from Coney Island says:
Can anyone tell us what Lisyansky has done in the community besides kiss up to community leaders that don't like him? He proposed and took credit for a bridge idea that was the brainchild of ALEC KRASNY years ago. His press person should have advised him on that since he used to work for Alec. Running a negative campaign won't work this year. But I understand the dilemma. When you don't have much to speak about..the only thing left to do is turn negative. Irony is that this is coming from a campaign talking about building bridges while burning them left and right

I once thought that Todd was a nice guy. But since he is obviously working with a bunch of thugs who post malicious lies about his opponent, I have lost all respect for him. Before Todd's thugs attack Treyger, they should do a little research and find out where their own boss, Todd, REALLY lives. I also do not understand why Colton is being dragged into this. He is the last honest man standing. Go to his community office and see what a politician is really supposed to be, not like the do nothings in Brighton Beach and Coney Island.
June 19, 2013, 5:47 pm
Melvin from Coney Island says:
I don't believe Dobrin has an original thought in that head of his. Lisanskiy kisses ass to Recchia, who obviously wants nothing to do with him. These are a bunch of clowns. Nobody from my neighborhood is taking these jokesters seriously. Nice to know Dobrin's wife and daughter live in Florida. He's here attacking Treyger about his residency, meanwhile Dobrin's family doesn't even live in New York? That's shady....Dobrin's got a lot of shade that he's throwin our way. Does he take us for fools? Dobrin you got another thing coming this September. You should move back to Florida with your wife now...and spare yourself the embarassment.
June 19, 2013, 7:04 pm
Rhonda from CONEY ISLAND says:
Who is Lisanskiy? What has he done for my community? or any community? He praises Dominic Recchia and Quinn. All he talks about is how he helped people after Sandy. He didn't come to my building to help me. He didn't come out that far in Coney Island. He's an opportunist. We've had enough of those. We need a leader. Coney Island needs someone that will fight for us. I was impressed with Mark Treyger. He will be a great fighter for my community.
June 19, 2013, 8:15 pm
Rainbow from Coney Island says:
To Coney Pat: Know what? We could care less about Treyger's old house, new house or in between house. We don't care about no portno, portnoy, port-a-pottie, seddio or seddiah. Know what else? We like Colton. A lot. He's a really good guy. He's always there for whoever walks in the door. Even if you don't live anywhere near his district, he'll try to help you. If Colton and Treyger are as tight as you say, then Coney Island will be a very lucky community indeed if Treyger wins. Todd is all talk, but at least he talks. Lisyanskiy is just a bump on a log, never says a word anywhere at any meeting, unless he is talking about how great Quinn is, how great Bloomberg is, how great Recchia is. Not only can't he talk, he can't think either. I really feel bad for him because he is so clueless.

Carolyn from Coney Island says:
I was at the debates, and I was impressed by young teacher Mark Treyger. When the guy opens his mouth, you just want to listen to him. I was really felt that this candidate knows the facts, did his homework. Both Dobrin and Lisyanskiy Could not formulate their message, they mumbled all evening, and people lost an interest in them. I think both of them are jelous of Mark Treyger because they know that they are no match to him, and they are loosing the race.

Jacky from Coney Island says:
I went to the forum in Coney Island John Lisyanskiy was the only candidate who knew what he was talking about, and the only one who actually answered the questions that were asked and the only one who knows how to move our community forward. Those who are not aware of his work after Sandy should really ask around. He was knocking on peoples doors in Coney West End dead in the night bringing them supplies in his personal car. Those questioning his efforts should be ashamed of themselves. He was a godsend to us, when no one else came to help. You want to talk about leadership, that was a clear proof of leadership, when we were down, he was the only one out of the candidates who stood up for us. And I believe him when he says that he will be here for us in good times and bad times. I have gotten to know him quite well and he is the only person who can get things done for us and has the needed experience and qualifications. I am proud to support John and urge everyone here to stop the attacks and concentrate on substance.
June 19, 2013, 10:18 pm
Rainbow from Coney Island says:
It was very nice that Lisyanskiy helped deliver food & water after Sandy. He was very lucky that he still had a car. Not every candidate was so lucky and I know that one of them almost drowned trying to escape the flood. Meals on Wheels does not qualify someone for being elected. Many, many, many people helped to deliver supplies after the storm.

Dobrin living in Florida would still give him an edge over Lisyansky. What has Lisyansky done ? Turning Sandy suffering into politics is not something to be proud of. Never saw or heard of him before election. Running for office is not a track record. He is the real empty suit! Works for the worst Council speaker who was a Mike Bloomberg rubber stamp. By the way why hasn't Quinn backed Lisyanky? Sad that his own boss won't even support him but he expects support from voters? Not going to happen!

What is it? Fight over nothing? Candidates and their trolls post lie after lie on opponents. Shame! We can have hundreds of comments, but Election Day will show not only how effective lie was but it will show the community will. Election will show what do we, the people, want. Continuation of empty talks or some real moves to help our families. Fix infrastructure, bring employment, and on and on. It seems to me that it is right to say that election will show our intelligence.

Exclusive! Democratic Petition Fraud CAUGHT IN THE ACT by YRs President

Someone's got some explaining to do.

This photo was taken by Brooklyn Young Republicans President Diana Sepulveda in the lobby of her building. What you're looking at is a bulletin board in the lobby of her building in Gravesend. Affixed to it is a Democratic Designating Petition for Mayoral candidate John Liu, Brooklyn Borough President candidate Eric Adams and City Council candidate Mark Treyger.

Alongside it is a note asking "Registered Democrats" to sign the petition in support of candidate Treyger. You can read the rest of the note for yourself.

For those who don't know Election Law, enrolled party members are supposed to witness the signature of other enrolled party members. In other words, any signatures submitted from these petitions, or others like these, would be done so fraudulently.

Since the culprit committing this fraud is unknown, this, in my opinion, calls into question all the signatures collected for these candidates. Is this an organized effort? A rogue petitioner? Who is to say? What would the opponents - Republican and Democrat alike - have to say about this?

And what do you think of this? Leave us a comment!
